In today’s competitive publishing and printing industry, the presentation and durability of printed materials are paramount. Perfect binding provides a beautiful square spine and a flush, professional finish with exceptional durability. Statex understands the significance of perfect binding and has mastered a range of binding techniques to cater to the diverse requirements of our clients.
Statex excels in adhesive perfect binding, the industry-standard binding method widely used for commercial book production. By precisely applying hot melt or cold glue adhesive to the roughened spine edge, we ensure a strong and long-lasting bond between the pages and cover. Consequently, this method is ideal for medium to large print runs, ensuring high-quality publications that captivate readers.
For projects requiring enhanced durability, we offer PUR perfect binding which guarantees exceptional flexibility, temperature resistance and moisture resistance because of the utilisation of polyurethane reactive (PUR) adhesive. Whether it’s a cookbook, manual, or outdoor guide, our PUR binding ensures that books can withstand demanding conditions without compromising on quality.
Following huge leaps in technology and recent investment in the binding department, we can now bind brochures with as little as 6 leaves of paper, thus opening up new avenues of opportunity for printed literature giving that uniquely profesional look to publications with very little content.
Additionally, the versatility of the binding line allows for very short run quantities from 10 copies up to 10,000 without any deviation in quality.
When it comes to coffee table books, art books, or journals, sewn binding showcases our commitment to quality craftsmanship. By folding paper sections and then skillfully sewing the book’s sections together before applying adhesive and drawing on the covers, we create a sturdy backbone that provides superior durability and allows for lay-flat or open-flat capabilities. The result is a premium finished product that exceeds expectations.
Oftentimes, printed cases are glued and drawn onto the book to give even more strength and presence and usually a printed, wrap around dust jacket will cover this case to highlight the content of the book and add further quality and wow factor.
Our lay-flat binding offers an ingenious solution for short-run, digitally printed publications that allows facing pages to match up at the spine without losing any text or image content.
Saddle stitching is probably the most popular and cost effective bookbinding technique used to bind printed pages together. It is called “saddle stitching” because the folded sheets are nested together and dropped onto the saddle-like form on the moving binding line. Using this method, publications must always be bound as multiples of four pages. This method is commonly used for booklets, magazines, newsletters and brochures. Page counts will rarely exceed 96 pages as the folded spine becomes too thick for the staples to hold everything together.
With our expertise in all aspects of print finishing and binding, we have successfully completed numerous projects, including the renowned Goodfellows portfolio brochure, otherwise known as the tableware bible. Through meticulous precision and unmatched dedication, we have created a beautifully bound masterpiece for the ‘Portfolio 6 – Concept to Table’ range, showcasing our ability to deliver outstanding results.
The brochure, now in it’s sixth edition, presents a remarkable display of culinary artistry, showcasing breathtaking design and photography capturing the exquisite and imaginative dishes crafted by renowned chefs. It encapsulates the epitome of excellence in restaurant cuisine and tableware. Every aspect, from the impeccable binding to the vibrant colors and intricate details, has been meticulously perfected.
Many months of planning, creative design, photography, videography, post production editing, artworking, set dressing and of course working with each individual chef, were all coordinated well in advance of production. We then printed a colour calibrated Epson proof of every spread of the brochure, so the design team could check and calibrate the colours and to ensure the images are exactly how the food was presented on the day of the shoot.
Once the colours for each page were checked and colour graded (where required), we produced the artwork and image files as lithographic printing plates and used a stochastic screen standard. This method allows for greater detail within printed images and provides better quality reproduction to that of standard lithographic screens. Stochastic screening can also enhance the colour range and produce more vibrant colors, allowing for a broader color gamut in the printed output and for this particular publication, it was an exceptional feature used to greater enhance the printed quality.
To ensure the printed quality was second to none and met the high expectations of the design team, we used a state of the art Komori printing press (Komori Lithrone S29P HUV Perfector) to produce the brochure. The press was equipped with advanced color management and registration control systems, resulting in precise and consistent color reproduction and high-quality print output. The “HUV” in the name stands for “Highly Reactive Ultraviolet,” referring to the use of UV inks and UV curing technology.
This allows for printing on a wide range of substrates and also allows for faster drying times and improved production times. UV-cured prints are generally more resistant to scratches, scuffs, and other wear and tear, making them suitable for applications where durability is essential – like restaurant kitchens!
